Medilink WM is incredibly proud to announce the winners of our 2017 Medical and Healthcare Business Awards, held on the 24th January this year at the BCEC (Birmingham Conference and Events Centre).
In his welcome address, Richard Stone, CEO, said: “Medilink WM works with life science companies daily, helping them with their present goals and requirements, from support with R&D activities, through to innovation support or help with NHS adoption goals, and through this continual interaction, Medilink knows the breadth and the depth of the skills and knowledge of the life science businesses in the region, and the passion they have to succeed in whatever they are doing. And in the current climate of almost continual political, economic and commercial doom and gloom, the Medilink WM awards give us a very welcome opportunity to showcase and celebrate some good news, the positivity inherent in our regional businesses, and to shout about their many success stories.”
As usual, picking our winners is never an easy feat, but rather a testament of all the creative, driven and exceptional companies whose membership we are incredibly grateful to have and with whom we hope to be able to work with for many years to come – and many Awards to celebrate.

2017 Medilink WM Medical & Healthcare Business Awards winners:
The winner of our Start Up Award (sponsored by Calthorpe Estates) this year was Roopra Medtech Consulting Ltd, whose unique approach to commercialisation and business stimulation not only provides start-ups with the correct expertise, but also ensures that their success is maintained.
Our Innovation Award (sponsored by Marks & Clerk) winner this year was Salts Healthcare Ltd, one of the UK’s oldest, family-run companies, that has grown to become a highly successful international medical device manufacturer. Salts Healthcare is a provider of innovative stoma care products and accessories.
Our Partnership with the NHS Award (sponsored by WMAHSN) went to The Binding Site Group Ltd whose project with the NHS aimed to determine if the replacement of urine analysis with the Binding Site Freelite test would improve the detection rates and thus decrease diagnostic delays for Multiple Myeloma, the second most common blood cancer, with the longest time to diagnosis.
This year, our Supply Chain Award (sponsored by Greater Birmingham International Business Hub) went to Datalink Electronics Ltd, who was awarded several large medical and industrial design contracts last year as a result of their ability to create innovative products. This ability has also enabled Datalink to enter the US medical devices market, creating a significant increase in export sales.
Our Outstanding Achievement Award (sponsored by Medilink Midlands) winner this year was Physiological Measurements Ltd, who was recently awarded prime provider by NHS Dartford, Gravesham and Swanley CCG through a competitive tender for their ultrasound service, covering a population of 256,000. Going one step further, PML offered patients the opportunity to have their ultrasound scans seven days a week in a central community setting. This vision was achieved through opening the NHS clinic in St George’s Shopping Centre in Gravesend.
Finally, the night ended with our CEO Richard Stone presenting Tony Davis, Commercial Director for the West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN), and previous CEO of Medilink West Midlands, with a Special Recognition Award for services to industry.
We would like to also take the opportunity to congratulate our Runners Up this year: Respiritracker by Evolyst, Bimar Ortho Spa, Green Cross Medico, Primasil Silicones Ltd; and The Tinnitus Clinic, who was presented with our “One to Watch” Award this year.
Joanne Mewis, Membership & Services Manager, said: “Our Medilink WM Medical & Healthcare Business Awards celebrate the outstanding achievements and innovation in the medical technology and life science sector, recognising those businesses leading the way to improve healthcare and patient outcomes. There was an amazing line up of talent on show, demonstrating the outstanding work and innovation across the region. I would personally like to congratulate all of the award winners, runners up and finalists for their exceptional achievements over the past year and for making the evening, once again, a great success!”
The winners of our 2017 Awards will now be entered into the National MedilinkUK Awards, taking place on 25 April this year at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry, as part of the 2018 Med-Tech Innovation Expo.
We would like to say a big thank you to Calthorpe Estates, Marks & Clerk, West Midlands Academic Health Science Network (WMAHSN), the Greater Birmingham International Business Hub, and Medilink Midlands for their incredible support as our 2017 Award sponsors; and to Ingram, Hawkins and Nock for their continued support as out Networking Reception sponsor.
Thanks again to all who entered, and we look forward to seeing our winners at this year’s Medilink UK Awards in April – it is always great to be able to start the year by celebrating some good news!
