An additional £270m of funding has been awarded to three West Midlands catapult centres to help develop new technology and fuel innovation.
£122m has been granted to the Manufacturing Technology Centre in Coventry, a world-leader in 3D printing; £99m to Warwick Manufacturing Group’s High Value Manufacturing Catapult; and £50m to the Energy Systems Catapult in Birmingham.
The investment is part of the £780m of additional funding announced by Chancellor Philip Hammond and designed to support innovation as part of the UK’s Industrial strategy. This will expand successful catapult centres, which encourage collaborative partnerships between business, science and engineering to develop new products and technologies.
Part of the new services, products and inventions so far created by the centres include cellular therapies to fight cancer and improve recovery of stroke victims and LED treatment for blindness.
